Do You Have What it Takes to be a Leader in Your Business?

When you have a business, you need to be a leader to be successful. Unfortunately, not everyone that starts a business is a leader.  To round things out, there are leaders, followers, and plenty of middle men. But the leader sets the pace for the business, for partnerships in the business, and for customers. Here are three leadership behaviors you should have as an Entrepreneur:

  1. Effective Communication. Talking is one-sided. Communication flows in more than one direction. As an Entrepreneur, listening to what your customers’ problems are and explaining the value of what you offer as the solution to those problems, is one essential part of the communication you need. Explaining to partners, vendors, employees, what steps to take for the best results and listening to what their obstacles are to following those steps is another essential part. Do not listen to respond, listen to understand and respond to add value. Being an effective communicator, will create longevity in your business.

  1. Pay Attention.Being observant will save time and money in the long run. If you pay attention to when shifts in customer behavior, you can position your company to survive the ups and downs that happen in business. Don’t just routinely buy the same amount of a product to sell. Instead take charge, pay attention to how much of that product customers are buying. When they are buying more, have more in stock. This will allow you maximize the demand and the lead the way to making more money. When they are buying less, purchase less inventory. This will allow you to save money on products that are not bringing in revenue. The same goes with service based businesses. Heavily market services that bring in more clients. Spend less time talking about and pushing the services that are not in demand. Also, test out more services related to the one that sells best. Pay attention to the details of your business cycles in order to be more successful.

  1. Make The Tough Decisions.Leaders make tough decisions. If you are not able to make those types of decisions, your business will not thrive. As an Entrepreneur, your priority is to give good service and make a profit. The team member not performing up to par has to be let go. The client making demands they have not paid for has to be given boundaries (and possibly an updated invoice reflected the additional costs). Your prices being the same for long lengths of time need to be increased. Services from people you like but do not need, have to be cut. You have to lead and do what is best for the growth of the business.

If you don’t have these skills to be a leader, start working on them. They are important. You will see results in your money and growth of your business.
