There are many Entrepreneurs that have a business, but do not know if they are really making money in their business. To be successful with your business, you need to know your bottom line. There are more complex versions of a business bottom line. However, I am referring to a basic bottom line –profit. As an Entrepreneur, you may know that you are bringing in revenue, but do you know the details of how much is left over after the business expenses are paid –that’s profit. There is an big difference and it is the difference in why even businesses that seem successful go out of business.
When you know your bottom line, you can see if you are losing or making money. That knowledge guides decisions on whether you need to transition in your business. For example, do you need to increase prices, reduce expenses, add or take away products or services, or change your target market altogether. Knowing your bottom line allows you to also evaluate whether where you are spending time and resources in y our business makes sense for your business. Investments of time and money should show a return on investment. How do you know if there is a return if you do not know the numbers? The bottom line is the first sign of when you need to look at the numbers.
To continue to go operate by spending money blindly on business expenses without knowing your bottom line, can have a tremendous impact on not only if your business is in good financial shape but also on just how long your business will even exist. For most Entrepreneurs, our business is like our baby. We put in a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to create and run our businesses. The best way to honor our personal, time, and monetary investment into our business is take the time to know the bottom line, use that information to make key decisions, and stay on track with our profits. We cannot avoid it, knowing our bottom line goes hand in hand with the success of our business.
